Claudia Thomas Riché, RN, M. Sc.


 Since 2004, Claudia Thomas Riché has served as the lead nurse clinical trainer at the Haitian Group for the Study of Kaposi’s Sarcoma and Opportunistic Infections (GHESKIO), located in Port-au-Prince. In her decade of service at GHESKIO, she has trained health providers on HIV/AIDS counselling, adherence counselling, and on the multi-disciplinary team approach. She participated in the preparation and drafting of a referral manual on the use of HAART (module on the team approach).  Presently, she is working on several project that include conducting nurse training, supervising and mentoring students, and participating in the recruitment process for new nurses.   In collaboration with Quisqueya University, Mrs. Thomas has been instrumental in establishing a nationally accredited advanced nurse practitioner program, with a focus on infectious diseases. Additionally, Mrs. Thomas acts as the Project Manager for this education initiative. The nurse practitioner program was one of the projects developed to response of Haiti’s need. She was also the assistant coordinator for a training project with the Fondation Merieux to build research capacity of health care providers locally. Finally, she is responsible for epidemiologic data monitoring for the GHESKIO Treatment Cholera Center.   Prior to joining GHESKIO, Mrs. Thomas was based in Montreal, Canada, where she served the nursing field under several different hats: research nurse at the McGill University; Family Health Nurse and a Tree Coordinator for the Health Family Program at the Center Local Service Community Cotes-Des-Neiges; and Head coordinator of 14 nurses and dieticians at the CLSC Cotes-Des-Neiges. She has also served as a nurse at the CLSC des Faubourgs, Interim Nurse Specialist at the Jewish General Hospital, Clinical Instructor at the University of Montreal, and finally, Staff Nurse in the Department of Maternity and Newborn cases of the Jewish General Hospital.   Mrs. Thomas completed her studies in Nursing Sciences at the University of Montreal, Canada. She received a BA and MSc at the same institution. From the Institute of Healthcare Improvement, Boston, USA, Mrs. Thomas recently received certification as an improvement advisor.   From the beginning of her carrier, Mrs. Thomas has shown interest in health education, communication, improvement of healthcare, public and community care, capacity building, and social responsibility through all her projects.
