Haiti Women's Soap MakingOur latest initiative, the Haiti Women’s Soap Project (Projet Savon d’Haïti Femmes), extends our commitment to improving public health in Haiti. In keeping with our core mission, the goal of the soap project is not simply to promote health through improved hygiene: it will also allow our nurses to act as transformational leaders by providing Haitian women with entrepreneurial skills and a sustainable source of income that can help improve the well-being of their families and communities. This innovative microbusiness program will use NECH-CIEH nurses to train Haitian women to become entrepreneurs in their own communities through the manufacture and sale of a proprietary liquid soap mixture. The soap can be used for handwashing and bathing, as well as washing dishes and clothes—and it is both cheaper and more effective than the liquid soaps currently available in Haiti. This project adds a new partner to the NECH-CIEH team, The University of Denver. This project is supported by the Puffin Foundation, Teaneck, NJ, USA and the Schutz-Engle Foundation, London, UK.
